Description

Tender ground beef slow cooked in a rich steakhouse style sauce, piled onto toasted buns and topped with melted cheddar cheese. These hearty sloppy joes are bold, comforting, and perfect for busy days when you want big flavor with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 6 hamburger buns, lightly toasted
  • 1/2 cup pickle slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and chopped onion until beef is browned and onions are softened.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Drain excess grease from the skillet and transfer the beef mixture to the slow cooker.
  4. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours or on high for 2 to 3 hours until thick and flavorful.
  6. If needed, cook uncovered for the last 15 minutes to thicken the sauce.
  7. Spoon the beef mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and top with shredded cheddar cheese.
  8. Melt the cheese briefly in a 375°F oven for 2 to 3 minutes if desired.
  9. Add pickle slices if using, place the top buns on, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Browning the beef before slow cooking adds deeper flavor.
  • Let the mixture thicken uncovered at the end if the sauce is too loose.
  • Toast buns lightly to prevent sogginess.
  • The beef mixture can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
