Description

Crunchy, buttery, and lightly sweet, Nigerian Chin Chin is the ultimate West African fried snack perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter (cold)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. Add cold butter and rub into the flour until crumbly.
  3. Stir in the egg and milk, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness on a floured surface.
  5. Cut dough into small cubes or strips using a knife or pizza cutter.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F.
  7. Fry Chin Chin in batches, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
  8. Remove with slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  9. Cool completely before storing or serving.

Notes

  • Let oil return to temperature between batches for even frying.
  • Use a slotted spoon to avoid excess oil when removing Chin Chin.
  • Cool fully before storing to maintain crispiness.
  • Add cinnamon or citrus zest for flavor variations.
