Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 14 ounces extra firm tofu, pressed and crumbled
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 12 large butter lettuce leaves, washed and dried
  • 1/2 cup carrot, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons green onions, sliced
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the neutral oil.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and black pepper until combined.
  3. Add the crumbled tofu to the skillet and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Pour the sauce over the tofu and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the liquid reduces and coats the tofu in a glossy glaze.
  6. Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool slightly.
  7. Spoon the caramelized tofu into butter lettuce leaves.
  8. Top with finely chopped carrot and sliced green onions, then serve immediately.

Notes

  • Press the tofu well to achieve the best caramelized texture.
  • Do not add the sauce before the tofu browns properly.
  • Keep lettuce leaves dry so they stay crisp.
  • Leftover filling can be used in rice bowls or wraps.
