Description

Golden baked calzones filled with seasoned ground beef, creamy ricotta, and melted mozzarella, served with warm marinara sauce for dipping. A comforting Italian classic made easy at home.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound pizza dough
  • 1 pound ground beef, cooked and drained
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup marinara sauce, divided
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine cooked ground beef, ricotta cheese, 1 cup shredded mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, ½ cup marinara sauce, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix until evenly incorporated.
  3. Lightly flour a clean surface and divide pizza dough into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into an 8 inch circle.
  4. Spoon filling onto one half of each dough circle, leaving a small border around the edges. Fold dough over to form a half moon shape and press edges together. Crimp with a fork to seal.
  5. Transfer to prepared baking sheet. Brush tops with olive oil.
  6. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Warm remaining ½ cup marinara sauce and serve on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Do not overfill to prevent leaks during baking.
  • Make small slits on top to allow steam to escape.
  • Allow filling to cool slightly before assembling for best texture.
  • Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for best crispness.
