Description
A quick, comforting sandwich that layers creamy avocado, juicy tomato, and melty cheese between golden toasted bread. Ready in under 20 minutes, this Tomato Avocado Melt is fresh, satisfying, and endlessly adaptable.
Ingredients
- Bread: 4 slices sourdough or multigrain bread
- Avocado: 1 large ripe avocado, sliced
- Tomato: 1 large ripe tomato, thinly sliced
- Cheese: 1 cup (about 100 g) shredded mozzarella or cheddar
- Olive Oil or Butter: 2 tablespoons for toasting
- Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
- Black Pepper: 1/4 teaspoon
- Lemon Juice: 1 teaspoon
- Fresh Basil (optional): 4 to 6 leaves
Instructions
- Preheat Your Equipment: Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium heat until warm.
- Combine Ingredients: Slice the avocado and tomato, then toss avocado with lemon juice and sprinkle avocado and tomato with salt and pepper.
- Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Brush one side of each bread slice with olive oil or butter.
- Assemble the Dish: Place cheese on the unbuttered side of two bread slices, layer tomato slices, then avocado slices, and basil if using. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out.
- Cook to Perfection: Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bottoms are golden and the cheese begins to melt, about 3 to 4 minutes, then flip and cook the other side until golden and cheese is fully melted.
- Finishing Touches: Remove from the skillet and let rest for 1 minute so fillings settle and cheese sets slightly.
- Serve and Enjoy: Slice each sandwich in half or quarters and serve warm while the cheese is gooey.
Notes
- Choose ripe but firm avocados so slices hold their shape.
- Pat tomato slices dry with a paper towel to prevent soggy bread.
- Layer cheese directly on the bread to create a moisture barrier.
- Reheat leftovers in a skillet over low heat to restore crispness.
