Description

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk, warm
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13 baking dish or round pan.
  2. In a small bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let sit until foamy (5–10 minutes).
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together egg, sugar, melted butter, and salt. Add the yeast mixture once activated.
  4. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, and mix until a dough forms. Knead for 8–10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes with a mixer until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down dough, divide into 12–16 pieces, and shape into balls. Place into prepared dish.
  7. Cover and let rise for 30–40 minutes until puffy. Brush tops with melted butter.
  8. Bake for 18–22 minutes until golden brown. Remove and brush again with butter.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.

  • Measure flour accurately to avoid dense rolls.
  • Use warm milk (about 110°F) to properly activate yeast.
  • Brush twice with butter for a glossy, rich finish.
  • Dough can be prepared ahead and refrigerated before baking.
