Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk, warm
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13 baking dish or round pan.
- In a small bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let sit until foamy (5–10 minutes).
- In a large bowl, whisk together egg, sugar, melted butter, and salt. Add the yeast mixture once activated.
- Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, and mix until a dough forms. Knead for 8–10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes with a mixer until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough, divide into 12–16 pieces, and shape into balls. Place into prepared dish.
- Cover and let rise for 30–40 minutes until puffy. Brush tops with melted butter.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes until golden brown. Remove and brush again with butter.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Measure flour accurately to avoid dense rolls.
- Use warm milk (about 110°F) to properly activate yeast.
- Brush twice with butter for a glossy, rich finish.
- Dough can be prepared ahead and refrigerated before baking.
