Description

Golden, crispy sesame balls with a soft and creamy taro filling inside. These delightful bites offer a perfect contrast of crunchy sesame crust and smooth, gently sweet taro center, making them ideal for dessert, festive gatherings, or a comforting homemade treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups glutinous rice flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 1 cup mashed taro, cooked and mashed until smooth
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar for filling
  • 3 cups neutral oil for frying
  • ½ cup white sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Heat 3 cups neutral oil in a deep pan over medium heat until it reaches about 325°F.
  2. In a mixing bowl, stir together 2 cups glutinous rice flour and 3 tablespoons granulated sugar. Gradually add ¾ cup warm water and knead until a smooth, soft dough forms.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup mashed taro with 2 tablespoons granulated sugar until well combined.
  4. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Flatten each piece, place about 1 tablespoon of sweetened taro filling in the center, seal tightly, and roll into a smooth ball.
  5. Roll each ball evenly in ½ cup white sesame seeds, pressing gently so they adhere.
  6. Carefully lower the balls into the hot oil. Fry for 6 to 8 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and puffed.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Keep the oil temperature steady to ensure even puffing and browning.
  • Seal the dough completely around the filling to prevent leaks during frying.
  • If the dough feels dry, add a teaspoon of warm water and knead again.
  • Reheat leftovers in a 350°F oven for 5 to 7 minutes to restore crispness.
