Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Canola oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, garlic salt, and onion powder.
  3. Whisk the milk and egg mixture into the dry ingredients. The batter should be somewhat thick; if it’s too thin, add a little more cornmeal.
  4. Heat a few inches of canola oil to 375°F in a deep fryer or Dutch oven.
  5. Working in batches, drop batter into the hot oil using a ½ tablespoon measuring spoon. For smaller hush puppies, use a teaspoon measuring spoon.
  6. Fry until golden brown, flipping once the bottom is browned.
  7. Remove the cooked hush puppies to a paper towel-lined plate or cooling rack to drain.

Notes

  • Don’t overcrowd the fryer to maintain the oil temperature.
  • Test one hush puppy first to adjust batter consistency if needed.
  • Serve with honey butter or dipping sauce for extra flavor.
