Description

A sophisticated take on the classic grilled cheese, featuring a combination of rich cheeses, savory extras, and perfectly toasted bread.


Ingredients

  • 2 slices sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup caramelized onions
  • 1/4 cup sliced tomatoes
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread with the softened butter.
  2. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side of one slice of bread.
  3. Layer the shredded sharp cheddar and Gruyère cheeses on top of the mustard-covered bread.
  4. Top the cheese with caramelized onions, sliced tomatoes, and fresh thyme, if using.
  5. Place the other slice of bread on top, buttered side out.
  6. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwich in the pan and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  7. Remove from the pan and let rest for 1 minute before slicing and serving.
