Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, heavy cream, and butter.
  2. Bring to a gentle boil, stirring constantly. Let simmer for 3–5 minutes until thickened slightly.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
  4. Let cool slightly before serving. Sauce will thicken more as it cools.
  5. Store in a jar or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Reheat before using.

Notes

  • For salted caramel, increase salt to 1/4 teaspoon or use salted butter.
  • Add a splash of bourbon for a grown-up twist.
  • Great over ice cream, cakes, waffles, and fresh fruit.
