Description

Wholesome banana and peanut butter chew sticks made for dogs, chewy and satisfying with simple pantry ingredients and easy baking steps.

Ingredients

  • Bananas: 2 ripe, medium
  • Peanut Butter: 1/2 cup (natural, no xylitol)
  • Rolled Oats: 2 cups
  • Egg: 1 large
  • Whole Wheat Flour: 1 cup
  • Water: 2-3 tablespoons (as needed to adjust dough)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, mash the bananas until smooth, stir in the peanut butter, then add the egg, rolled oats, and whole wheat flour. Mix until a cohesive dough forms, adding 2 to 3 tablespoons of water if needed to reach rollable consistency.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Lightly flour a work surface and a rolling pin to prevent sticking; have the parchment-lined baking sheet ready.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness, then cut into stick shapes with a knife or pizza cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spaced slightly apart.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Bake the sticks for 20 to 25 minutes until they are lightly golden and slightly firm to the touch. For a chewier texture remove closer to 20 minutes, for firmer chews bake a few minutes longer.
  6. Finishing Touches: Remove from oven and let the sticks cool completely on a wire rack so they firm up and are safe for chewing.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Offer one stick as a treat, break into smaller pieces for training, and always provide fresh water alongside treats.

Notes

  • Use natural peanut butter without xylitol, do not use sweetened or artificially sweetened varieties.
  • Allow treats to cool completely before serving to prevent crumbling and to ensure safe chewing.
  • Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or freeze for up to two months.
  • Adjust portion sizes based on your dog’s size, age, and dietary needs.
