Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose or white whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup or honey
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts or raisins (optional)

Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 oz full-fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup plain full-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease or line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the applesauce, maple syrup (or honey), oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Fold in chopped nuts or raisins if using.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Bake for 22–27 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While the cake cools, make the frosting: In a mixing bowl, whip the cream cheese, Greek yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and cinnamon with a hand or stand mixer for about 5 minutes, until smooth and fluffy.
  9. Once the cake is fully cooled, spread the frosting over the top. Cut into squares and serve.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
  • If your frosting is runny, continue whipping—it thickens as it incorporates more air.
  • This cake stores well in the fridge for up to 5 days.
